Every guided hike on this site takes you up with a guide, and none of them includes the cable car. What separates them is the peak, the route, how you get to the start and who can come along. Our verdict rests on those facts, and you can check each one on the listing.
Summit plateau or Lion’s Head
Table Mountain is the bigger climb, with the summit plateau and a choice of routes. Lion’s Head is the separate, shorter peak next door, with chains and ladders on its upper section, and the classic place for sunrise and sunset; its guided hikes run from two and a half to four hours. If the plateau is the goal, book a Table Mountain hike. If the light matters more, book Lion’s Head. Lion’s Head at sunrise and sunset.
Route and terrain
Platteklip Gorge is the direct route up the city face and the usual first summit: steep throughout, with little shade but no scrambling. India Venster is a steeper line with scrambling sections, for sure-footed hikers with a head for heights. Skeleton Gorge climbs the back of the mountain from Kirstenbosch garden, and Kasteelspoort comes up the Atlantic side past the Diving Board. On the Widevision summit hike the guide sets the route for the day’s conditions, while The Cape Town Local lets you choose Platteklip Gorge or India Venster. Table Mountain hiking routes compared.
Getting to the start
The Kasteelspoort hike by OTC Adventures includes transport from and to your accommodation in the City Bowl. On The Cape Town Local’s hike, the Widevision hikes and the Lion’s Head hike with coffee by Cape Escape Tours, hotel pickup is an option you add. For Skeleton Gorge and for Atlantic Outlook’s Lion’s Head hike you make your own way to the start, and at Kirstenbosch you also pay the garden entrance. Skeleton Gorge from Kirstenbosch.
Children and minimum age
The Widevision summit hike takes children from age 4. The India Venster and Skeleton Gorge hikes and the Lion’s Head hike with coffee are not suitable for children under 12. The remaining listings name no minimum age, so check the product page before you book with children, and keep in mind that the chains and ladders on Lion’s Head call for a sure step.
Company on the trail
Armed robberies were reported on some trails in 2025 and in January 2026, and rescue teams are regularly called out for hikers who underestimate the mountain. With a guide you are not alone on the trail, and someone sets a pace that keeps you in daylight. A guide does not replace your own fitness. Safety on the trails.
Heat, wind and the way down
In the southern summer the city face gets the full sun, so morning starts and sunrise hikes avoid the worst of the heat. The southeaster stops the cable car on roughly 60 to 90 days a year according to the operator, and the tablecloth cloud can hide the view from the top. The Widevision summit hike mentions a cable car descent in its title, but the ticket is not included there either: buy it separately, online or at the top station, and keep enough daylight and energy to walk down. Weather, wind and the best time to hike.
